It is possible to beat the game without winning fights, but I haven't tested if the hard hat makes non-combat tests harder and XP/buffs are kind of tight to try and do it without sleeping. Alas, the hard hat is a jerk and will not let me take the dark horse. DX #2 WebDickerin' just gives you a free dynamite, and some shop discounts. Foraging is nice, but not 100% necessary.
