When the engine is running, the hydraulic lifters found in most Lycoming engines take up that slack and keep the value train working smoothly and quietly.

Web17 Jan 2014 · The rocker arm transfers the movement of the cam lobe to the valve, pushing the valve open. The clearance is there to allow for the expansion of metals as they heat. When the valve is open, the rocker arm is pushing it open, so there is no clearance. Step 1: Remove the spark plug and securing the spark plug lead away from the spark plug. Step 2: Remove the muffler, crankcase breather and any other components that block access to the valve chamber. Step 3: Remove the cylinder head bolts and take out other bolts from the engine components to reach the valve chamber.
